What to Buy a Minecraft-Obsessed Kid

Minecraft merchandise is a minefield of near-identical plastic. Here is what a kid who plays every day actually wants, and the two questions you must answer before buying anything.

Heads up: we earn a commission if you buy through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend — no brand pays to appear here and nobody sends us free products. How this works.

Minecraft has been the best-selling game on earth for over a decade, which means the merchandise aisle is enormous and about eighty per cent of it is interchangeable plastic. The good news is that the gifts which actually land are easy to identify once you know two things about how they play.

Answer these two before you buy anything

1. What do they play on? Console, tablet, or a computer. This decides which accessories are even compatible, and it is the single most common way a Minecraft gift gets returned.

2. Do they play alone or with friends? A child who plays with friends wants a Realm. A child who plays alone wants building content. These are completely different gifts.

If they play with friends: buy a Realm

This is the most-wanted and least-bought Minecraft gift there is.

A Realm is a private, always-on Minecraft world hosted by Mojang. Without one, playing together means one child has to host, everyone else can only join while that child is online, and the world vanishes when they log off. With one, the world is simply always there and their friends can drop in whenever.

It costs a few dollars a month. For a child whose entire social life runs through the game, it is transformative in a way no physical object is, and almost no adult thinks to buy it.

The catch: you buy it inside their account, not as a boxed gift. Pair it with something small to unwrap.

If they play alone: buy building content

Kids who play solo are builders. They want more to build with, and the honest answer is that most of that comes from inside the game via Minecoins on the Marketplace — skins, texture packs, worlds, adventure maps.

Minecoins come as gift cards. Same logic as Robux for a Roblox kid: it feels like a cop-out to you, and it is precisely what they asked for.

The physical gifts that hold up

Most Minecraft merchandise is disposable. Three categories aren’t.

LEGO Minecraft. The one crossover that genuinely works. It is the same activity — building — in a different medium, the sets are well designed, and they hold attention long after the novelty. This is the safest physical Minecraft gift at any age from six to twelve, and the one most likely to still be in use next year.

A good wired headset. They are on voice chat with friends constantly. Same criteria as in our Roblox guide: padded adjustable headband, flexible or detachable mic, wired so it is never flat.

The books. Genuinely, unironically good — the official handbooks and the illustrated fiction get read by children who otherwise resist reading. Cheap, and parents rate them far higher than the toys.

Used every day

A wired kids' headset with a microphone

Minecraft is played with friends over voice chat. Wired avoids the charging problem entirely, and the mic is the part that gets used most.

Quietly excellent

Official Minecraft handbooks and guides

Well made, and they get read by children who will not read anything else. Cheap enough to add to another gift rather than stand alone.

If they play on a computer

Two upgrades matter far more than anything Minecraft-branded:

A proper mouse. Minecraft on a laptop trackpad is genuinely miserable, and a lot of kids are playing that way without ever mentioning it. Any decent wired mouse is a large, immediate improvement.

More memory, if they run mods. Modded Minecraft is memory-hungry and an older family laptop will stutter. This is a real gift for a twelve-year-old deep into modpacks — but confirm what the machine takes before buying anything.

Biggest upgrade for laptop players

A wired gaming mouse

Playing Minecraft on a trackpad is miserable and very common. A real mouse is the cheapest meaningful improvement available to them.

What to avoid

  • Anything for the wrong edition. Java and Bedrock are different products. Bedrock is console, mobile and Windows; Java is PC only. Marketplace content and Minecoins are Bedrock-only. This is the number one cause of disappointment here.
  • Generic Minecraft-branded clothing and bedding for anyone over about eight. It reads as an adult buying at the idea of the hobby rather than the hobby.
  • The low-cost knock-off figures. The official ones are not expensive, and the difference in quality is visible immediately.
  • Anything that says “Minecraft account” or offers cheap accounts. Buy from Minecraft or a legitimate retailer. Nowhere else.

If you have no information at all

A Minecoins card plus a small LEGO Minecraft set covers both the “playing with friends” and “building alone” cases, costs less than one console game, and has almost no chance of missing. If they are older than about ten, swap the LEGO for a headset.

Still unsure which platform they’re on? Our console decision guide settles that in about four minutes.

Still not sure?

The Gift Finder asks three questions and gives you a shortlist. It takes about twenty seconds and works even if you know nothing about what they play.
